This workshop will explore the identity of what it is to be a therapist. Are we just the practiced mirror of our training? Do we let our own personal experiences in our life guide us in our profession? This Workshop is suitable for those completing their MA training, and for those who have graduated. Participants will receive a CPD certificate.

We will look at one’s identity that occurs through the art therapy training, and examine our personal experiences in life that makes us the therapist / person we are. With a practical, hands-on session, using art materials and the outline of the therapists body, we will explore this “identity” and what makes you the therapist.
10 am Refreshments and welcomes
10.30-11.00 am Discussion: “I, therapist”
11.00-12.00 am Start of exploration art piece
12.00- 1.00pm Lunch break
1.30-2.00 pm Group discussion on experiences of morning workshop
2.00-3.30 pm Continuation and finishing of art piece
3.30 – 4.30pm Group discussion, drawing together of artwork, themes, emotions, and concluding thoughts.
About Workshops at Studio Upstairs
The workshop will be run at Studio Upstairs, an arts studio and therapeutic community for artists with history of mental health. The workshop will be run by two art therapists from Studio Upstairs, Frances Lumbers and James Cowie, both of whom are HCPC registered. Frances also manages a mental health centre and supervises both art therapy students and trainee counsellors. James works as an art therapist in the NHS at inpatient and community settings and supervises art therapy students at the Studio Upstairs and the NHS.
Both continue their art practice at the Studio Upstairs.
