The Tight Modern is a miniature replica of London’s iconic Tate Modern Gallery and showcases 50 disabled and marginalised artists in the world’s smallest temporary gallery.

Tight Modern is touring the country and touching down in Gillett Square in October as part of Hackney’s annual celebrations for World Mental Health Day Sunday 14th October.

Studio Upstairs is an Arts and Health charity based in Gillett Square Dalston, dedicated to supporting recovery through creativity. Through this event we are hoping to engage the local community and describe in creative ways how art can save lives.

A group show focusing on the lives of ten Studio Upstairs artists.

With each moment we live, we create the stories of our lives. We gather tales, create worlds and make memories. Studio Upstairs Arts Collective presents RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW, this second installment of a three part series is a detailed study of ten lives and ten stories, where the viewer is invited into the secret world of each artist.

The first installment looked into the past this time we look at the present.

The carefully constructed and engaging context of the selected works of RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW demonstrates Studio Upstairs’ commitment to supporting artists with a different vision.

The next meeting will next be on Saturday 26th May 2012 at 12pm until 2pm.

On Friday 20^th July 2012 we are delighted to be hosting an evening of celebration in partnership with The Royal Academy of Arts in London, to raise awareness that ONE IN FOUR adults in the UK suffers mental health problems at some time in their life. We will also be celebrating the work of the Access Programme at the Royal Academy of Arts and Studio Upstairs who are both London partners of the Pallant House Gallery’s Outside In project

All proceeds raised from the silent auction over the preceding fortnight will go towards supporting the work that we do in both London and Bristol.

The event will be tied in with an evening at the Summer Exhibition, which is the Royal Academy’s busiest time of year. Artists work will be displayed in the Royal Academy, Works will feature on the Studio Upstairs website, in the catalogue for the event and be exposed to art collectors.

This year thanks to some funding from Arts Council South West we are moving our annual show to the autumn as part of Drawing Through. If you follow us on Facebook and Twitter you will undoubtedly have heard about this already so forgive me if this is old hat:

Drawing Through is a project that sees Studio Upstairs Bristol collaborating with artist Alice Jones and curator Jack Gibbon of Antlers Gallery. It will culminate in three – yes that’s right THREE – shows later this year in venues throughout Bristol. Our annual Open Studio will of course remain at our Studio space in Bristol’s Harbourside but the other shows will be in town and high profile!

So if you are getting your walking boots ready to tackle the  behemoth that is Spike Island’s Open Studios then remember that this year we are not exhibiting. Instead we are planning and plotting our next show! Watch this space to find out more as we confirm dates and venues over the coming weeks.

" Realising that I can't hide from life - I embrace it.

So then it is not what my work is about that is of importance- as that changes with circumstance, and circumstance is predominately influential. What is important to me is the origin of my creation:

Heart and my soul.

My work is merely the expression that needs expressing, the feeling that needs relieving or the words that I can not say. The processes of change and conditioning are omnipresent in my work. Fascinated by how my world is dictated to and how I dictate to it, both the giver and the receiver, I constantly question my transitory role as a human.

Even when I doodle I am sub consciously reacting to my environment. Abstract at first doodles are formed out of a single thread of automatic line and within those lines my minds content is revealed.

Like I said, I can't hide. "

Bio

Jamie House is an internationally exhibiting artist Camera Obscura builder and educator. He graduated from University of the Creative Arts England with a BA (Hons) in Photomedia (2004) and successfully completed his PGCE in post compulsory education in 2010 at the University of Plymouth.

Jamie’s work explores how we look at the world through representation by critically analysing the medium and apparatus of photography. Employing a range of alternative processes to the latest digital imaging techniques. Image production and dissemination are at the core of Jamie’s practice.

Jamie’s recent project `stranger` sets to show the viewer how we share and store images on-line through social networks and image sharing websites. This project is a result of Jamie producing images of other people’s memories that I have mined from the internet on various social media sites. These people have befriended me online but are not people I have met in person.

Each image is produced by a long exposure focussed on a computer screen while browsing a stranger’s social media images. The resulting images are layers of images and time within someone’s life.
