Studio Upstairs writers’ workshop was started in 2003 as a place for members to meet regularly and write in a creative, supportive environment. Writing in such a space parallels that of the painting studio where artists are encouraged to experiment and take risks, and the work taken into the public eye. The writers regularly perform at SU open studios and have also performed at Can Openers in the Central Library in Bristol, on local radio as part of South Bristol’s Love festival, at the ISPS Conference at Bath University, AHSW Showcase, Taunton, the Halo Café, Bristol and at a number of exhibition previews such as Beyond Appearances at the Create Centre, Bristol.

The writing and performance of the group goes from strength to strength as the core of eight members, actively develop their work. A number of anthologies showcasing their writing have been produced, some of which are still available. The latest publication is titled ‘feral rain’ and was produced as part of the Studio’s 20th Anniversary celebrations.

Nick Moore, workshop facilitator

Writers' Workshop

Being a member of the writing group is an opportunity to practise speaking to a group of people of various outlooks. Often the pieces I write don’t always impress me and it is encouraging and cheering when something I’ve written receives a good reception. I feel that to write is to think! Without writing I am not thinking. I look back over what I have written in the past and I am surprised at the amount that I have written that would not have been written had I not been a member of the group. Exercising the mind to think and write also, I believe, improves conversation.

It is inspiring to listen to the other group members’ interpretation of themes; the variety and differences.
